So you reached this page because you screwed up your dual boot installation and for some reasons VISTA is not booting you machine......I too had such a dreadful incident with my Laptop recently and had to run heither-theither on Internet to search for a fix since I, certainly, was not in the favor of formating my drive just because of this......

So you reached this page because you screwed up your dual boot installation and for some reasons VISTA is not booting you machine......I too had such a dreadful incident with my Laptop recently and had to run heither-theither on Internet to search for a fix since I, certainly, was not in the favor of formating my drive just because of this......

having fixed it....I congratulated myself for being smarter this time.......and now putting it here for you to be able to congratulate yourselves as well.... smile.gif


Q. What is the purpose of this text?
A. This text will help you restore a VISTA boot loader which was lost as a result of you deleting the other operating system (my case RHEL 4.0) running along with VISTA as a dual boot. Note duly that I assume you are running RED HAT ENTEPRISE LINUX 4.0 as the other operating system and I will, by no way, bear the responsibility for recovering the damage caused to your system.




To be able to restore the VISTA's bootloader you'll need the Vistal installation DVD.

1. Boot the system with the help of Vistal installation DVD.
2. Select the language option and click next.
3. On the lower left corner you'll see the option of "repair your computer". Click on the link to go to maintenance mode.



4. Windows will try to search for existing windows installation and as in my case it detected the Windows Vistal installation.


5. Select the windows vista operating system and click on next.

6. You'll see the maintenance windows as show below. Click on the last option "command prompt"



7. Now type two life saving commands:



1. bootrec /fixboot
2. bootrec /fixmbr



Phew!!!
Restart windows and you should be able to boot your windows vista operating system normally as ever.
