Πέρασαν 4 χρόνια από το 'Boatman's call'. Γιατί τόσος πολύς χρόνος;

Μετά το 'Boatman's call' ένιωσα την ανάγκη να σταματήσω, βρισκόμουν σε μια περίοδο δημιουργικής ύφεσης. Όχι ότι δεν είχα ιδέες, αλλά έπρεπε να συζητήσω. Συνήθως μετά από κάθε δίσκο υπάρχει η περίοδος της συζήτησης, ένα είδος απολογισμού, έτσι έγινε και με το 'Boatman's Call'. Δεν ήθελα να γράψω τίποτα, όσο και αν προσπάθησα να κάτσω στο πιάνο να παίξω, σηκωνόμουν κάθε 10 λεπτά κι έκανα κάτι άλλο. Τον τελευταίο χρόνο όμως μου ήρθε η διάθεση να γράψω.

Στον νέο δίσκο υπάρχουν παραπομπές στο Λονδίνο. Πώς πέρασε ο χρόνος παραμονής στο Λονδίνο;

Κάτι που έχω ανακαλύψει με το Λονδίνο είναι το γεγονός ότι δεν μου αρέσει να ζω εδώ. Δεν είναι εύκολη πόλη, το μόνο που βρίσκω ενδιαφέρον να κάνω εδώ είναι να έρχομαι στο γραφείο και να δουλεύω. Στην Αυστραλία που ήμουν ξανά τα Χριστούγεννα είναι τόσο ανοικτός χώρος που μπορείς να κινηθείς εύκολα. Όταν βρίσκομαι εκεί δεν έχω διάθεση να δουλέψω γιατί το μυαλό μου είναι συνεχώς στο πώς θα περάσω καλά, πώς θα ζήσω καλύτερα την ζωή μου.

Πριν από 3 μήνες κυκλοφόρησε το νέο σου βιβλίο 'The complete lyrics of Nick Cave'. Υπάρχουν κάποιοι στίχοι για τους οποίους νιώθεις κάτι ιδιαίτερο;

Μου αρέσει αρκετά το 'Papa won't leave you Henry'. Πιστεύω ότι αποτέλεσε το μήλο της Έριδος για κάποια από τα νέα μου τραγούδια όπως το 'Ηallelujah', 'Darker with the day', 'Oh my lord', πρόκειται για τρία 'Walking songs'. Όταν ακούω το 'Papa won't leave you Henry' ξεκινάω ένα ταξίδι χωρίς προορισμό και χωρίς όρια.

Πότε σχεδιάζεις να γράψεις νουβέλα;

Νομίζω ότι έφτασε η ώρα, τώρα πια είμαι πιο οργανωμένος και συγκεντρωμένος για κάτι τέτοιο, πριν από μερικά χρόνια θα έλεγα σίγουρα όχι, σήμερα το σκέφτομαι σοβαρά.

Με την Susie παντρευτήκατε πρόσφατα, το τραγούδι 'No more shall we part' είναι αφιερωμένο σ' αυτήν;

Ναι το έγραψα γι'αυτήν και της το αφιερώνω, νομίζω ότι το αξίζει, συμμετείχε με τον τρόπο της στον δίσκο.

Πώς της φάνηκε το album;

Της άρεσε αρκετά, θα έλεγα ότι είναι αρκετά οξυδερκής μουσικά, έτσι ώστε να είναι σε θέση να αντιληφθεί την αξία των τραγουδιών. Έχει διαφορετική αντίληψη από την δική μου. Είναι πολύ ευχαριστημένη που συμμετείχε στον δίσκο, αρκετά τραγούδια είναι γραμμένα γι'αυτήν και νομίζω ότι ήταν μια από τις καλύτερες "συνεργασίες" που είχα.

Τι είδους μουσική ακούς τελευταία;

Ακούω συνέχεια δίσκους του Beethoven.

Υπάρχουν κάποιοι καλλιτέχνες από την τελευταία γενιά που να σε έχουν επηρεάσει;

Νομίζω ότι οι Dirty Three το έχουν κάνει, είναι πολύ καλή μπάντα, μου αρέσει η αίσθηση ελευθερίας και αυθορμητισμού που εκπέμπουν μέσω της μουσικής τους. Τους χρωστάμε αρκετά. Ακούγοντας τον δίσκο έχεις την αίσθηση ότι δεν μεσολάβησε η παραμικρή διάθεση για εξωραϊσμό των τραγουδιών, δεν θελήσαμε να τα στολίσουμε, παρουσιάζονται αληθινά χωρίς την παραμικρή δόση εντυπωσιασμού.

Αυτή είναι καλή περίοδος της ζωής σου;

Μπορώ να πω ότι όντως είναι μια καλή στιγμή της ζωής μου. Τα πράγματα πηγαίνουν αρκετά καλά, είμαι ευτυχισμένος βλέποντας τα παιδιά μου να ομορφαίνουν μεγαλώνοντας, είμαι πιο ερωτευμένος με την γυναίκα μου, δουλεύω αρκετά και θετικά και κατάφερα να πολλαπλασιάσω τους φίλους μου.

Υπάρχει κάποια προοπτική για συμμετοχή σου στον κινηματογράφο;

Έχουν σταματήσει να μου προτείνουν να παίξω σε ταινίες, μου έστειλαν μερικά script αλλά τώρα δεν υπάρχει τίποτα στον ορίζοντα.

Για ποια φάση της δημιουργίας σου νιώθεις περισσότερο περήφανος;

Νομίζω ότι η αρχική σύνθεση των τραγουδιών είναι αυτό που με συναρπάζει περισσότερο. Με ενθουσιάζει η ιδέα της δημιουργίας, να φτιάχνω μικρές ιστορίες και να συνδέω το νόημά τους. Μ'αρέσει να αντιλαμβάνομαι το τραγούδι από το αρχικό στάδιο του και μετά να παρακολουθώ την εξέλιξή του.

Μετά από τόσα χρόνια πώς βλέπεις τους Birthday Party από την θέση που βρίσκεσαι σήμερα;

Νομίζω ότι οι Birthday Party ήταν μια πολύ δυνατή μπάντα. Είχα καιρό να τους ακούσω, αλλά τώρα με αφορμή τα session του John Peel ο Mick Harvey μου έδωσε ένα cd και πραγματικά σοκαρίστηκα.

Σου λείπει καθόλου η Αυστραλία;

Έχω δυο απόψεις για την γενέτειρά μου, η πρώτη λέει ότι πρόκειται για ένα υπέροχο μέρος που όταν βρίσκεσαι εκεί δεν θέλεις πραγματικά να φύγεις, δύσκολα την αποχωρίζεσαι, και μια δεύτερη που... καλύτερα να μην την συζητήσουμε τώρα.

Πιο είναι το καλύτερο σημείο μέσα στον χώρο που δουλεύεις;

Το πιάνο, είναι γαμήλιο δώρο από τους γονείς της Susie, είναι οικογενειακό κειμήλιο, ένα πανέμορφο Steinway που φέτος έχει γενέθλια, γίνεται 100 χρόνων.

Μπορείς να μας περιγράψεις μια τυπική μέρα του Nick Cave;

Αφού ξυπνήσω και περάσω λίγη ώρα με την γυναίκα μου έρχομαι εδώ - συνήθως τις καθημερινές - και εργάζομαι για μερικές ώρες, μετά ξανά πίσω σπίτι με την οικογένειά μου.

Rhinoceros Hunting in Budapest is a beautiful and poetic work that provides an ethereal ride into a world of absurdity, isolation and loneliness through a menagerie of abstract imagery, poignant music, and majestic dialogue. The story begins with a young American man flying overseas to hunt rhinos in Africa with his estranged girlfriend who is living in Paris. As the background of the story is revealed, we learn that his search of her may not be as sincere and untainted as he had led everyone to believe. Upon arriving in Paris, the young man encounters Teen, a lonely, despondent girl in need of instant physical comfort (sex) who offers to help in the search, only to discover that the girlfriend, Lola, is working as a stripper in Budapest with her new "manager," played by a magnificently eerie Nick Cave. After a fall out with Teen, the boy makes his way to Budapest and tracks Lola down in a prostitution house where he confronts her (and his own feelings) in a chilling, choreographed climax. Set in Papua New Guinea, To Have and To Hold is a compelling psychological drama about love, guilt, passion and obsession set on the Sepik River in the PNG highlands, one of the most remote and mysterious places on earth.

From the opening theme, whose sweeping orchestral music transports the audience down the Sepik into another world of which we know very little, to the haunting strains of the “Romantic Theme”, this is a musical work of uncommon beauty. To Have and to Hold director John Hillcoat has enjoyed a long association with Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld (fellow Bad Seeds member) and Mick Harvey, who composed the score to the original motion picture soundtrack. Hilcoat directed many of their video clips while they provided the score for his first feature film “Ghosts of the Civil Dead”.

In addition to the original score and “I Threw It All Away” the soundtrack also features Papua New Guinea’s Raun Raun Theatre performing “Mourning Song” and London’s Keety General performing “Gangsta Bone”.

The sky over Wenders' war-scarred Berlin is full of gentle, trenchcoated angels who listen to the tortured thoughts of mortals and try to comfort them.
