Population 436: On face value this looked like a B-Grade horror film...but much like the recent VENOM the movie left me pleasently surprised and was a decent watch! One cab describe it as a throwback to those horror films from the 70's and 80's with dashes thrown in from THE VILLAGE as well as films like THE HILLS HAVE EYES and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (minus the blood and gore ofcourse). The film revolves around Steve Kady(Jeremy Sisto) who is a investigator for the Census Bureau. A smalltown called Rockwell Falls hasn't had their population changed in the last 200 years and he decides to go investigate what is happening. Upon reaching there he slowly realises that something is very wrong. The people are friendly in their old fashioned and what they consider "PERFECT" lifestyle with no crime etc but behind all this lies a town who has been performing terrifying rituals under the name of religion for years and years. Disturbing experiments, murders, death and demented religious rituals is what unfolds and how Kady escapes the town forms the crux of the story. Performances are surprisingly good by Sisto as well as the relatively small cast of unknowns who all play their characters. Direction is great and the movie maintains a great pace building the suspense well and unfolding the story bit by bit. There are some genuinely scary moments-but the focus here is more on story and characters although the events that unfold are simply bizzare at times. The blood and gore are on the lowside. The movie can best be described as a very pleasent surprise.
