If the photo had been taken when the sun was shining from a different direction it would look just like any mountain and rocks. We humans tend to recognise familiar patterns where in reality they are random. The ancient Greeks and other civilizations recognised gods and animals in the sky, we see a face on the moon, etc. It is just the way our brain works.
I really hope there is life on Mars but I don't think it is developed enough to create works of art. I am also certain that life exists in other solar systems in our galaxy; as to whether they ever visited or are visiting earth I am skeptical but I keep an open mind.
