Ed And Denyze Alleyne-johnson, Oxford Suite Options

Ed Alleyne-Johnson has been busking for over 20 years, since he was a Fine Art student at Oxford University using an electric violin which he hand-carved with a kitchen knife, a custom pedal-board and amp which he modified to run off rechargeable batteries. The set-up had enabled him to perform on the street in almost every major city in Europe, across the U.S. and Canada from New York to San Francisco.

He collaborated with New Model Army on their Top 40 single "Vagabonds", and toured with them for five years.

He can often be seen performing in Chester town centre, near the Grosvener shopping precinct.

His own compositions are available on three solo albums:

Two albums co-written by and performed with his wife, Denyze:

This second album was released in the UK on 26 January 1998.

The title track 2020 Vision was remixed by Ronnie Stone, who recently recorded the Mansun album. White Rabbit is a cover version of the classic Jefferson Airplane track.

Boscawen-un was inspired by the Cornish stone circles which Ed and Denyze often visit.

A review:

Back in 1992, a pleasant pastoral piece drifted across the airwaves of BBC Radio 2, redolent of English spires, rolling countryside and Vaughan Williams on speed. This was Ed Alleyne-Johnson's 'magnum opus' 'Purple Electric Violin Concerto'.

EA-J took a transparent purple violin and committed musical hari-kari on five strings, frequently against a ground bass, using any number of effects pedals. If Hendrix had played violin this would have been the result.

The approach was somewhat unique in that there were no backing tapes, overdubs or remixing. Alleyne-Johnson built up multi-layered sounds using the ubiquitous digital delay whilst playing 'live'.

Alleyne-Johnson had previously worked with New Model Army and had gained something of a reputation for his impromptu street shows in his hometown of Liverpool although he studied fine art at Oxford University. It is the city of dreaming spires that formed the inspiration for 'Purple Electric Violin Concerto'.

He never quite repeated the novelty of this album, although there was a follow-up in 'Ultraviolet' (1994). He also produced a couple of albums with his wife, Denyze, which blended gothic rock, hippie mysticism and the classics.

A truly individual performer, Ed is frequently spotted turning heads in Chester which throbs to his ground bass. A new double album is due spring 2005.

Echoes, the long-awaited new double album from Ed Alleyne-Johnson will finally be released on 14 March 2005 on Wingspan Records. It will be available at all branches of HMV and most other major record stores.

The two-disc set contains 33 newly-recorded tracks, all of which are cover versions of classic rock, pop and dance tracks, performed live on 5-string electric violin with digital delays and effects pedals in Ed's own distinctive style.
