![]() KEFALONIA Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands. It has a total area of 688 square kilometers. It is located south of Lefkada and Ithaki, north of Corfu across from the Corinthian gulf. It is considered as one of the most beautiful islands in Greece because of its many contracts. It has beaches that drop steeply and suddenly into the sea. It has lush greenery, mixed with mountainous shade from its many fir trees. A harmonious blend of sea, mountainplains and sky make it stand out. Its mountainous highland surpasses all of the other Ionian islands, with ranges that beginat Cape Dafnoudi and end at the most south point at Cape Mounda. In the southern district of the island lies the most significant mountain called AENOS which is also called the Big Mountain". Its highest peak, "Big Soros", reaches a height of 1.626 meters. Other mountains on the island are Saint Denate(1.131m), Rudi(1.125m) the Red Ridge (1.082m), Xerakias(1.068m), Omorfia(1.043m), Sella(1.000m), Merovigli(993m), Vrohonas(946m), Avgo(929m), Kalon Oros(901m) etc. The petrifaction of the island is mainly lime stone. This fact guarantees the presence of geological phenomenon (the corrosion of limestone which forms caves, abysses, etc) throughout the island. These facts are of interest mainly concerning the behavior of the water. The few and small plains of the island are found in the area of Krania, Omalon,Samis, Pilarou, Livathou and Palikis. The coasts of Kefalonia form many bays and land masses. The bays of the most importance are the ones located in the areas of Sami, Myrtos, Argostoli, Lourda and Livathi. The Maine capes are(beginning from the south and moving east) Mounda, Kapros, Sarakiniko, Mertikas, Kendtri, the north Dafnoudi, the southwest Atheras, west Ortholithia, Skeza and Gerombos, the most south are Akrotiri, Saint Pelagia, Liakas, Kastanas, etc. The coastlines are generally rocky and steep towards the Ionian sea but have gentler formations towards the east side. Of particular interest are the caves of the island for example the precipitous Melissani, Agalaki, Saint Theodoron, Zervati, Drogarati, Sakou, etc. Geographically the island is split into two districts, the east which is intensely mountainous and the much smaller west which is mainly hilly. The bas-relief of the whole island is made more intense by its abrupt coastlines, something not at all unusual in the whole circumference of Kefalonia. The bas-relief is due to the masonic gaps which have been created by old earthquakes. -------------------- |

MAKRIS GIALOS
A few minutes away from the capital Argostoli two of the island's most popular sandy beaches are situated. Makris Gialos with snack bars, one restaurant and water sports facilities is the favourite beach of young people and families. Separated by rocks, lies Platis Gialos with a cafe, showers and changing rooms. ![]() -------------------- |

MYRTOS
With the road high above Myrtos Bay you have the most stunning view of the white pebbly beach and the sea with its marvellous shades of blue. But be careful if you cant swim or if you have small children. The beach shelves steeply the moment you step into the water and the currents are very strong! ![]() -------------------- |
