in AMD world, chipset is always cheap... high tech like memory controller lies on the CPU... so you get cheap boards and RIDICULOUSLY expensive CPUs

Basicaly, AMD's Socket AM2 processors are about the about the same as ones for older Socket 939, except for the fact that their integrated memory controler supports DDR2 memory instead of DDR1. Benefits of this are small. They can go up to 10 % if dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processor is used. With sigle core procesors (Athlon 64 or Sempron) there is almost no difference.
The reason why your mobo is cheap lies in a fact that it is using older VIA K8T890 chipset, instead of some new ones, such as ATI's Radeon Xpress 3200 or NVIDIA's nForce 5 series.

Nick, the reason why AMD's processors were so expensive does not lie in their integrated memory controler, but rather in the unability of Intel to make anything to conter them properly.
Fortunately for us all, Intel's new baby known as Core2 is comming out at the end of this month and it beats AMD's K8 chips by about 20 % on the same clock speed. AMD will have no choice but to lower prices. I've heard that in few months we will be able to get cheapest Athlon 64 X2 for about 140 €.

Bah... I am AMD man myself, but I will never give AMD my hard earned money if Intel offers better price/performance ratio. AMD untill recently always offered more bang for the buck and that's why I loved it. But now it's simply charging too much.
Once Intel reclaims performance lead after 4 years of waiting, I'm hoping that we'll once again have cheap AMD processors. I've never owned Intel CPU in my life, but that can change, depending on prices Intel will set on Core2.

Advantages of Athlon 64 X2 for Socket AM2:
- compatible with future Socket AM3, chance for cheap upgrade
- soon to be very cheap (or so I hope)
- cheaper motherboards
- available now
- broader chipset support

Advantages of Core2
- performace kicks ass
- cooler
- better overclocking potential

Your site is interesting, but I think that over the years I've build more PCs myself than this company has.

i dunno, im 16 and my partner is 18, ive built 6 in the year that ive been building them (3 for the company), like i said, im not the main builder im the website and ect guy.... anyway, i have a thing, once a company ###### me off, im done with it, like ATI, back when ATI RAGE PRO's were good i had one, then the pc started to get older and i was like 10 at the time, and they removed the drivers for the site and stopped supporting it in every single way, and once it burnt out they would not help me even at all, and back then i knew like nothing about the hardware of a pc... but like if someone orders a pc and wants intel in it, or ati thats diffrent, i mean id never buy one for myself, ever, but the last pc we did had an intel in it, sooo u know what i mean

different story but FYI: today Intel announced full Conroe product line with same price as the 9XX series...

the cheapest Conroe is now 10% faster than 955 Intel Extreme Edition and 20% faster than X2 4800+ consuming 70watts instead of 90-135 and using a plain CPU cooler...

2007 & 2008 are Intel years

I will give you my experience of last week. About a month back Intel dropped their prices by about 40 % for Core2 duo 2.66 mghz & ati-100 chipset motherboards. A client wanted 2 machines to run Win2k to replace his old machines. The combo would take ages to do just about anything I wanted starting from booting to disk access or display update. I had all the drivers loaded & tried all kinds of settings in bios.

The combo turned out to be so miserably slow that I had to return them in exchange for Athlon64 3000+. with MSI nForce motherboards for the same price. The difference was unbelievable. I don't think I ever want to go back to Intel.

That was probably a problem with compatibility. Let's not forget that old Win 2k was not even designed to work with more than one executing unit. It's wrong to dismiss C2D just because of one bad expierience. Those kinds of problems are common on PC platform, but I still wouldn't switch to Mac.

it is obvious that untill AMD circulates the Brisbane, as an answer to Intel... the later will completely dominate the market... and do not be surprised to see quad-core flourish sooner than we thought
