I took this home today... i went with cdpanos and they opened the case in front of us : it was my first hard disc that was inside a black leather pouch-style bag to avoid scratches on the glass surface !
i installed a while ago, all working fine... now i am using Norton Ghost to clone the previous system HD ( a WD 1200JD - 120GB SATA - 7200RPM / 8MB cache ) on the new one ![]() Considering the specs of my new toy ( 10.000RPM - SATA - 16MB cache... this is the fastest HD around the market currently, only 700$ U-SCSI 15K RPM drives used on servers can get faster) i am expecting a significant performance boost on the system ![]() anyway, i have to transfer 110GB of data and it will take about an hour ... can't wait that long ! -------------------- ![]() |

If I was in your shoes and had money to burn, I would go with that Hitachi's 750 GB monster. Transfer speed is almost the same and you would get 600 GB of space more for about the same price.
Still, you can't beat low latencies (time between disk gets a request and finds the data on its plates) that Raptor offers. Faster motor does it's magic. I just hope it's not too loud. |

you are right, the cost is too much...
well, i will give all detail here : i foudn a really ogod price for the monster so i could not resist: ΠΛΑΙΣΙΟ, 335€ (355€ offlien shopping) & e-shop, 265€ for the non-windowed model (without the X) i paid 265€ for the Raptor-X, normally this is about 290-300 at best. Anyway, price for a 750GB Seagate is significantly higher and i am ok with storage space, as hyou said i needed that extra boost on daily use oh, and the good news: WD has made this model at least 20% less loud compared to WD 74GB Raptor. I have worked a lot on 74GB models and even RAID 0 arrays of those ( chainsaw noise ! ) and i am positive on that -------------------- |

I came across an article by a former design engineer from one of the HDD manufacturer on Tech Republic on inner workings of the hard disk & partitioning. After reading it I am convinced that higher RPM does not really translate into higher performance. A higher capacity (gb) lower RPM hard disk will in all probability will give you better performance, longevity & reliability than a higher RPM lower capacity disk.

or try to convince me when i saw with my own eyes my system load in 30% less time -------------------- |
