The film "It's Kind of a Funny Story" was critiqued for incorporating gimmicky sequences that distracted from the main story line, such as an animation sequence (which is really cool by the way), and the "music video" shown in this clip. Personally I thought these departures made the film more interesting and added humor. This particular clip is also interesting for another reason: it is used to show the character played by Keir Gilchrist discovering (while in a psych ward) that he has a remarkable singing ability. What is especially interesting is that he does so without signing a single note himself. Initially, the patients, participating in a "music therapy" session, start hammering out an amateurish version of "Under Pressure". Then it blends into the original song by Queen and David Bowie, with the actors all decked out in outrageous costumes, and we never hear Gilchrist sing at all. Yet in the end, we all know what a remarkable singer he is. |
