PHEIDIAS MANUFACTURED THE ZEUS’ STATUE FROM GOLD AND IVORY

As we know, there are seven ancient wonders, five of which are Greek creations (if you don’t puff your wares……default.biggrin.gif )and are the Zeus statue made of Gold and Ivory at Olympia, the temple of Artemida at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Alikarnasus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Chronologically the first one was the Zeus’ statue, it was builded in 466 – 456 B.C. During a period of 800 years the Zeus’ statue was looming in the Olympia’s temple and lured the gathering of thousands visitors, every year. The temple (creation of the architect Livonas the Helios) that sheltered the statue as much as the statue itself (creation of the famous sculptor Pheidias) were worldwide known, even to those that our ancient forefathers called them “barbarians”.

The pedestal, on where was placed the statue, was made by light blue Eleusinian marble with a very rich sculpted decoration. It was 1m high, 6.65m long and 10m in width while the main statue was by itself 13m – 14m high. A great variety from precious materials and gems were used for the structure of this masterpiece. The naked parts of the Zeus’ body were consisted by slabs of ivory, perfect assembled with each other. The mantle was consisted by foils of gold, the ebony throne was embellished with stuck on gems, ivory, copper and embossed carvings. The god’s sandals were from gold and many precious stones embodied its bushy long beard.
In his right hand was holding a Winged Victory from gold and ivory and his all-embracing presentation betrayed an unrivalled magnificence. The god’s face, according to the descriptions, was the apotheosis of the Pheidias’ art and it inspired a feeling of awe.

The fate of the Zeus’ statue was a kind of adventurous…. The year 80 B.C it was plundered by the hordes of Sillas, the year 393 A.D it was plundered for one more time by the king of Goths, Alarihos. The year 426 A.D the statue, with no precious stones and gems any more, was transported to Constantinople by the Theodosius the B’ and finally the 475 A.D it destroyed completely by a big fire…..
