You should separate them if you want to make a forum about one particular subject (like computers, high-tech and such). Many come for the games and games only. They bring hits, but most of them don't stay to discuss subjects. You can only hope to interest them in posting; you can't force them into anything. As a web journalist I know about these things all to well. Surfers simply don't react well to restrictions, Internet being the freest medium that ever existed.
Once my former boss tried to force visitors to enter our forum ONLY through the main site, and in that way force them to see all the banners that bring him profit. Needless to say, it did not work out well and that measure was quickly abolished. Trouble with Yourforum is that it is too diluted and doesn't cover only one subject. That approach worked well in the old days when Internet was small, but today there are millions of people visiting all kinds of web forums every day and they are looking more into specific subjects of their interest. Example: Besides Yourforum, I visit three more forums on regular basis. One of them covers only computers and attracts many experts in this area. The other one covers science fiction and gathers writers and critics. Third one is wares forum and you know which one it is, Nick. When I'm looking to learn more about a cell phone for instance, I go to a forum that covers only them. When I want do discuss politics, I go to a forum that covers only that subject. The fact is that people today are mostly looking for specific things on the net. I personally like Yourforum and not just because it gives me opportunity to practice reading Greek. It's fun and gathers all sorts of people, but I doubt in its ability to gather strong community. |

the Arcade post restriction has led to controversial arguments ... for older members it was not an issue to adjust to it... for new ones it can be a nightmare to manager to post ...
still not sure what works better for the good of the community -------------------- |
