THE FAISTOS DISK
The First script with movable letters

The famous Faistos disk, one of the most rare archaeological discoveries, remains up to now uninterpretated. In July of 1908, in Faistos , the Italian scholar Luigi Pernier, discovered a circular disk from hardened soil, about 20cm diameter, both of its sides shows two coils that formats 5 different circles, that are marked, among their blanks, with vertical lines. It also has various symbols in groups. On its one side it has 30 compartments with 118 symbols and on the other side, it has 31 compartments with 123 symbols that are curved by a mould on the potter’s clay before it hardened. The fact that there were used wooden or metallic stamps shows the ultimate similarity of the symbols , that are repeating. It’s obvious that the disk isn’t curved by hand but they have usedmolten or wooden letters. This fact marks the Faistos Disk as the “….oldest sample of movable typography in the world” (James/ N. Thorpe, Ancient Inventions).

The first typographical page of humanity, the Faistos Disk, still remains uninterpratated despite the efforts of many famous scientists, such as Ventris and Chandwick (the translators of Linear B' ). The Faistos Disk dates back to 1700B.C (P. E. Cleator, Lost Languages)

I believe that the existence of the Faistos Disk determines the first global effort to imprint a message by the use of molten or curved movable letters (an idea that nowhere else had appeared). It’s easy for someone to assume that those constractors wouldn’t bother to make so many embossed letters if it would be for only one use. Therefore there must be even more similar disks. Unfortunately, it hasn’ t found another one disk, similar to Faistos Disk, which might means a lot or nothing. Probably they have been destroyed or they haven’t located yet………

i am aware that a patent from Hewlett Packard in Laser Beam Emmission Scanning was utilised on this and much more detail was revealed on the disc than with traditional methods

Numberless attempts have been made so far to decipher the Phaistos disk, using the most diverse methods of study, leading to the most diverge conclusions about the purpose, the contents of its inscription and its creators.

...And none of them have reached to a common conclusion or translation....

(1) In a recent book entitled " The Phaistos disk speaks Greek " Efi Poligiannaki claims to have solved the mystery of the disk and that the text is a prayer and the language is Greek. Her method is based on a combination of acronymic expanations and similarities between the disk symbols and the symbols from other linear scripts.

(2) The "Massey twins" request help from other linguists in order to help advance their research. Their research is based on similarities between the disk symbols and the symbols of Proto-Byblic script. They feel that it is possible that the disk contains a magical text possibly a curse. Still they think that it is more likely that the language of the disk is Indoeuropean. They have now announced that they have completed their efforts and published the results(6-2000).

(3) At "Lexiline" we can find another effort to decipher the disk by Andis Kaulins. The claim is that the language of the disk is Greek and that it contains the proof of a geometric theorem. The Phaistos Disk was deciphered by Andis Kaulins in 1980 and the decipherment published in that same year as The Phaistos Disc: Hieroglyphic Greek with Euclidean Dimensions - The "Lost Proof" of Parallel Lines" - available through the Harvard Library in the Harvard-subscribed monograph series "Origins: Studies in the History of Mankind and its Languages"

(4) We are also told that Dr. Steven Fischer has deciphered the Disk.
Dr. Fischer published his original findings in the book "Evidence of Hellenic Dialect in the Phaistos Disk", 1988. More recently he published the book Glyphbreaker that includes the story of the Phaistos Disk together with his newer efforts in deciphering Rongorongo. Dr. King claims that the language is closely related to Mycenean Greek and that the disk is a call to arms.

(5) Historically, almost anything has been proposed, including prayers, a narrative or an adventure story, a "psalterion", a call to arms, a board game, and a geometric theorem. While many enthusiasts still believe the mystery can be solved, scholarly attempts at decipherment are thought to be unlikely to succeed unless more examples of the glyphs turn up somewhere, as it is generally thought that there isn't enough context available for meaningful analysis.

This general opinion is nevertheless disputed by several scholars on the basis of the work of the mathematician Claude Shannon. Shannon theory about the Unicity distance states that, in theory, the text's length is sufficient for reaching only one decipherment that makes sense. The problem is, however, that once there are reasons to think that a valid solution has been found, it is necessary to verify this solution by all means possible (generally by deciphering another text written in the same script), to be sure about it. Unfortunately until today no second disc was found, what makes the verification difficult.

The authors seem to think that "The Phaistos Disk, along with other artifacts that are surfacing in recent years - are coming to light as means of triggering our awareness about the shift in consciousness - the spiral movement up the ladder of awareness - beyond 3D - and the speed of light - higher faster moving frequency of light - the change you feel in your soul at this time." and finally concludε that "In conclusion, the Phaistos Disk is another one of the 'Games of Thoth' created to bring awareness about the nature of reality.
