So, do you kiss your kids on the lips? Both girls and boys? How old? Did you/do you kiss your parents on the lips? Lets discuss. Sans judgment, por favor

Erin Zammett Ruddy

"My blogger/writer/all-around-cool-gal friend Joanna Goddard wrote about this topic on her blog yesterday—she is an unapologetic mouth kisser when it comes to her adorable baby, Toby. I watched the comments and opinions roll in (um, 381 at last count) and, well, I wanted to add my two cents. And, more importantly, hear yours! Because I think the lip/cheek debate is a fascinating one and its been on my mind a lot lately.

The background: Unlike Joanna, I didnt grow up kissing my parents on the lips at all (if you remember, I also didnt grow up saying I love you to them, despite the fact that we all loved—and love—each other immensely). It just wasnt how we rolled—kisses were on the cheek and it honestly made me a little uncomfortable when Id see grown kids plant one on their parents' mouths. Maybe thats the super prude in me talking but thats how I felt. And, if Im really being honest, how I still feel. I just cant imagine kissing anyone on the lips other than Nick (or Tim Riggins). Joanna's grandfather once told her: "A man should kiss his father on the forehead, kiss his friends and family on the cheek, and kiss his wife on the lips." And I kind of agree. Though lately that opinion may be changing…

It rarely even occurred to me to kiss Alex on the lips when he was a baby (despite the fact that I would fully make out with his cheeks/chin/eyes/nose/head any chance I got). This could have been the first-time mom germaphobe in me or the fact that we had MRSA swirling through our house (or, more likely, that it wasnt how I was raised and so I resisted any urge). Nora seems to be a different story. She loves to pucker up and kiss anyone and anything she can find (she kisses strangers, her dolls, her books, the baby on the Yobaby yogurt container, her sippy cups, even Nicks iPad if we play her the Elmo and Ducks clip, her current obsession). And heres the thing: If you try to give her a cheek, shell grab your face with two hands and force you to give her your lips. Which, of course, is adorable. And, I have to say, I love it. After I read her books at night, she says, “nigh, nigh,” pulls her paci out, says “kiss,” then kisses me smack on the lips and dives headfirst into her crib. And Im in heaven. There is really nothing sweeter.

Will I still be doing this when shes 10? 5, even? Doubtful. Has it changed the way I kiss Al (making out with his cheeks/chin/eyes/nose/head any chance I get)? No. I think its a cute little baby thing but I dont see myself being a lip kisser for long. Though I did once eat a piece of food that fell out of Alexs mouth so I guess you never really know what youre capable of as a mom, do you?

So, do you kiss your kids on the lips? Both girls and boys? How old? Did you/do you kiss your parents on the lips? Lets discuss. Sans judgment, por favor.

P.S., Unlike my house growing up, there is no shortage of I love yous in the Ruddy home (i.e., Im willing to buck tradition and do my own thing). Last night I told Alex I loved him while he was eating dinner (the kid took down about 10 pieces of broccoli, I couldnt help myself) and he said, verbatim: “Mom, you say that too much. I know you love me and I love you. Now youre just embarrassing me.” The worst part? He said "embarrassing" with a midwestern accent! (Nick is from Michigan).

P.P.S, I do not even think he knows what embarrassing means—hes only three and a half—but hes heard his cousin say it and just happened to use it in the correct context. It was pretty hilarious nonetheless."

Should parents kiss their kids on the lips?

Some people find the act of a parent kissing his or her child on the lips inappropriate.

Personally, it feels strange even writing that title.

Why wouldn't parents kiss their kids on the lips? Isn't that what all parents do? You know, kiss their kids on the lips to show their love? Apparently, some people find the idea of a parent kissing his or her son or daughter on the lips deranged and disgusting. But who?

One is a reader of the advice column penned by Margot Howard (daughter of Eppie Lederer, who once wrote an advice column as the famous Ann Landers) who wrote in under the name "Want My Husband's Lips for Myself" to complain that her husband regularly gives a peck on the lips to his 5-year-old daughter.

And, really, the letter writer's name ("Want My Husband's Lips for Myself") says it all, doesn't it?

WMHLFM wrote into advice columnist Dear Margo asking if the fact that her husband kissing his daughter on the lips completely freaks her out was weird or not.

His daughter (the advice seeker's stepdaughter) is five, and this stepmother of one year, who has kids of her own, says that her husband kissing his daughter on the mouth is "driving me crazy" and "aggravates me to no end."

The crime, as she describes it, is a "peck," but, she declares, it belongs on the girl's cheek, not her lips.

"I even explained that you do not kiss on the lips unless you are married," she waxes. "I have mentioned that I'm totally against the gesture; he said he will do so until the day he dies." Why so upset, stepmom? According to her, it's "a sexual gesture and very inappropriate."

Can I just say, Are you kidding me? A father can't kiss his 5-year-old on the lips? Because it's "sexual"? According to whom?

According to her, that's who, someone who makes it clear by her moniker that she's jealous of the affections that her husband bestows upon his daughter, which, for the record, I think is the real issue here, and the kissing is just her way of expressing it and making her pathology their (imaginary) pathology.

To a degree, Margo agrees with WMHLFM, deeming the activity "creepy." Although, ultimately, advice-giver Margo seems to believe that it is not inherently "sexual" and to each is own.

"Ask yourself why you feel so possessive of his lips and whether it is hard to share his affection?" This was my initial question as well.
