For PCs that are not allowed to get on the Internet for security issues.
For PCs on slow dialup connections or GPRS. For PCs that are maintained by System Admins that prefer clean, tidy Windows security upgrades and patches than online scripts that do the same. For PCs that will allow a user to browse and uninstall updates via Add/Remove in Control Panel. Then you will need to download all Microsoft patches manually and make a neet batch file to execute them all at once. Ideal for updates on fresh configurations... But how will you be able to download all those files ? Windows XP post SP2 files alone are more than 60. Windows 2000 post SP4 + Rollup are about 100. Windows 2K3 too. then we have 64bit XP and 64bit 2K3. Oh, forgot Vista ( double the size of each patch to get a clue how big updates are on Vista ). For all the above reasons, Microsoft decided ( more than a year ago ) to provide Full ISO files with ALL security patches on a monthly basis This Bulk ISO update system is first mentioned in KB913086. Article ID : 913086 INTRODUCTION This article describes the ISO-9660 CD image files that contain security updates for Microsoft Windows. This article contains a link to the current ISO image file that is available on the Microsoft Download Center. MORE INFORMATION Microsoft now releases ISO-9660 CD image files that contain all the security updates that are released on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site for Windows. The ISO image files are released at the same time as security updates are released on the Windows Update Web site. The ISO image files are intended for corporate administrators who: Manage large multinational organizations. Must download multiple individual language versions of each security update. Do not use an automated solution such as Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). By using the ISO image files, administrators can download multiple updates in all languages at the same time. To review the security bulletins, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security Use ISO image files An ISO-9660 image file is an exact representation of a CD or DVD that includes the content and the logical format. The most common use of an ISO image file is to record, or "burn," the image file to a recordable CD or DVD. This operation creates a copy of the original disc that includes the file name and volume label information. You can open ISO image files and copy their contents to a local folder. This is similar to ZIP files. Additionally, you can mount and access ISO image files as a virtual device. Note To create a usable CD-ROM from an ISO image file, you must use third-party CD-ROM writing software. For more information about how to create the CD-ROM or about how to mount an ISO image file, see the documentation that is included with the third-party CD-ROM writing software.
