Description:
To the Hindu the hemp plant is holy.

A guardian lives in the Bhang leaf...

To meet someone carrying Bhang is a sure omen of success...

To see in a dream the leaves, plant, or water of Bhang is lucky; it brings the goddess of wealth into the dreamer's power...

A longing for Bhang foretells happiness...

No good thing can come to the man who treads underfoot the holy Bhang leaf.

Yogis take deep draughts of Bhang that they may center their thoughts on the Eternal...

By help of Bhang, ascetics pass days without food or drink.

Besides being a cure for fever, Bhang has many medicinal virtues...

It cures dysentery and sunstroke, clears phlegm, quickens digestion, sharpens appetite, makes the tongue of the lisper plain, freshens the intellect, and gives alertness to the body and gaiety to the mind. Such are the useful and needful ends for which in his goodness the Almighty made Bhang...

It is inevitable that temperaments should be found to whom the quickening spirit of Bhang is the spirit of freedom and knowledge.

In the ecstasy of Bhang the spark of the Eternal in man turns into light the murkiness of matter...

Bhang is the Joygiver, the Skyflier, the Heavenly Guide, the Poor Man's Heaven, the Soother of Grief...
Recipe Ingredients
  • 1 ounce Cannabis (leaves and tips)
  • 2 to 3 cups water
  • 4 cups warm milk
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons chopped almonds (and/or pistachios, cashews, etc.)
  • 1/2 tablespoon poppy seeds ~ to potentiate dreaming
  • 1/2 tablespoon melon seeds ~ to potentiate cooling
  • 1/2 tablespoon fennel seeds or caraway seeds
  • 1/2 tablespoon green cardamom seeds
  • 1 teaspoon peppercorns
  • Some ginger root and cinnamon bark
  • 1/2 cup rose petals ~ to potentiate bliss
  • 1 cup sugar
Recipe Instructions
Remove any sticks or seeds from the Cannabis.

Boil the water, and pour into a clean pot.

Add the Cannabis and other dry ingredients (excepting the sugar) to the water, and cover. Let this brew for about 7 minutes.

Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth, pressing firmly to extract all the liquid. Save this extraction.

Place the solid residue in a mortar, and add 1 or 2 tablespoons of warm milk. Slowly but firmly, grind the milk and leaves together.

Gather up the Cannabis and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Repeat this process until the pulp is very smooth and dry and at least 1 cup of milk has been used. Collect all the extracted milk and, when only dry fibres remain, discard the residue.

Combine all the collected liquids, including the water in which the Cannabis was first brewed.

Add the sugar and remaining milk.

Chill, offer to Shiva, and enjoy.
