Tutorial Instructions
Do you want to upgrade to the latest Firefox but your favorite add-on does not work with the new version?

The following Firefox add-ons are old versions that have been edited to increase the artificial maximum version limit so they can be installed on the Firefox 3.5 browser. Please note that no other changes have been made to these files so the normal update process still works. If you have any issues with function, compatibility or performance, please contact the original add-on authors directly.

These files are provided as a temporary public service only. You should always use the official updates as released through the Mozilla add-on web site over any version found here.

To use these add-ons, download and save these files then use the installation instructions at the end of this page.

Edit Your Own

If you would like to make your own updates, here are the directions.

* Download the old XPI file from the Mozilla web site. You may need to temporarily disable Javascript (which is very easy to do with the NoScript add-on) then right click on the green button and select "Save Link As". Do this for all of the XPI files you want to install in the new Firefox version.

Ubuntu Linux Method

* Double click on the XPI file to view the contents of the archive.
* Right click on the INSTALL.RDF file and select "Open With". This brings up a prompt for the program you want to use for viewing the file. Type "gedit" (must be lowercase) in the Application box or select "gedit" from the list and click the Open button.
* Look for the line that starts with "<em:maxVersion>". If there is more than one, look for the one that follows the <em:id> ending with "7384" (this is Firefox). Change the "<em:maxVersion>" number to "3.5.*". See the example below. It is important not to change any other numbers so when the author releases a new version you will be able to download and install it through the normal update process.
* Close gedit. This prompts you to save your changes. Click the Save button. Then the archive manager asks if you want to update the XPI file. Click the Update button and you are done. You are ready to install.

Example:
<em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id>
<em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>3.5.*</em:maxVersion>
Microsoft Windows Method

* Open the XPI file. This can be done with one of the following methods.
1. Rename the XPI file to add a ".ZIP" file extension. This often requires enabling the viewing of file extensions in your Windows preferences by removing the check in the box next to the "Hide extensions for known file types" option under Tools > Folder Options > View tab. The Windows default hides the true file extensions for all known file types which prevents using this method.
2. Associate the .XPI extension with your favorite ZIP file compression utility and open the file. Make sure you use a ZIP file compression utility that supports ZIP files without the .ZIP extension.
* Edit the INSTALL.RDF file. This is a text file.
1. If your ZIP file compression utility allows direct editing of files inside the ZIP, skip to the next step.
2. If your ZIP file compression utility does not allow direct editing of files inside the ZIP, you will need to extract this file, edit it with a standard text editor like Notepad and add it back to the XPI file replacing the original.
* Inside the INSTALL.RDF file, look for the line that starts with "<em:maxVersion>". If there is more than one, look for the one that follows the <em:id> ending with "7384" (this is Firefox). Change the "<em:maxVersion>" number to "3.5.*" and save the file. See the example below. It is important not to change any other numbers so when the author releases a new version you will be able to download and install it through the normal update process.
* Update the XPI file with your new edit, rename it back to have the .XPI file extension if needed and you are ready to install.

Example:
<em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id>
<em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>3.5.*</em:maxVersion>
Installation

To install a local XPI file, simply drag your custom XPI file to any open Firefox window and accept the install.

After you restart Firefox, go back to the Tools/Add-ons window and check for updates. This ensures you have the latest official release for each add-on.

If your favorite XPI file is not listed here on this page and you are unable to contact the author or make the edit yourself, please let us know and we'll do our best to include it in our list.
