YOUNG mother Xenia King has deserted her family for a killer on Death Row

Xenia King, 31, has left her home in Lower Stondon and two children, aged 10 and four, to be with her new love in Florida, John Marquard (pictured right).

Husband Stuart, 37, is showing no signs of heartbreak that their 13-year-old marriage could be over.

"I am not upset or angry and I don't really feel the need to give my side of things," he said.

"I am sure everyone is able to form their own opinion on this and I don't need to add anything to it. We have moved already to Norwich and just want to get on."

Mr King was clearing out the belongings of his four bedroom home, which is now up for sale, and planning a new start, when he spoke to our reporter.

Neighbours were shocked by the news, one commenting: "I knew they were moving but I didn't know about all that. It really is bizarre."

Despite moving more than 4,000 miles to be with her pen pal Marquard, who murdered Stacy Ann Willets, 22, in Florida in 1991, Mrs King claims: "I'm not mad".

The relationship began after she responded to a plea for human contact from Marquard on a web-page devoted to Death Row inmates, on which he also expresses his hopes that his appeal against the death penalty would be successful.

Speaking for her children she said: "Of course my children don't want me to go, I will miss them terribly. But it is urgent that I am with John because I don't know how long he has got left.

"Hopefully when they are older they will not think that mummy doesn't love them, because I do very much."

"We write to each other every other day but it can be frustrating. He wants to know about my children, but we also speak about having our own."

Mrs King got in contact with Marquard, who committed the murder along with Michael Abshire, last year and quickly formed an attachment, although she has never spoke to him about his past.

The killer pair decided to rob the mentally-impaired girl and steal her car. They lured her into woods, hacked her with a knife, drowned her in ankle-deep water then tried to decapitate her.

Mr King became suspicious about the contact when his wife redirected her mail, then his fears were confirmed in November when Mrs King told him she wanted to meet Marquard.

After visiting again in March this year her mind was made up. Her husband initially tried to stop her leaving him, including hiding her passport..

Mrs King claims that boredom and depression had left her regretting the marriage that began when she was just 17.

On Monday she left for Florida and hopes to secure a permanent Visa, should US officials recognise her engagement. Her home in Lower Stondon is now empty.
