The Specter of Newby Church

user posted image

This photograph was taken in 1963 by Reverend K. F. Lord at Newby Church in North Yorkshire, England. It has been a controversial photo because it is just too good. The shrouded face and the way it is looking directly into the camera makes it look like it was posed – a clever double exposure. Yet supposedly the photo has been scrutinized by photo experts who say the image is not the result of a double exposure.

The Reverend Lord has said of the photo that nothing was visible to the naked eye when he took the snapshot of his altar. Yet when the film was developed, standing there was this strange cowled figure.

The Newby Church was built in 1870 and, as far as anyone knows, did not have a history of ghosts, hauntings or other peculiar phenomena. Those why have carefully analyzed the proportions of the objects in the photo calculated that the specter is about nine feet tall!

Baby Ghost

user posted image

A woman named Mrs. Andrews was visiting the grave of her daughter in a cemetery in Queensland, Australia in 1946 or 1947. Her daughter Joyce had died about a year earlier, in 1945, at the age of 17. Mrs. Andrews saw nothing unusual when she took this photo of Joyce's gravemarker.

When the film was developed, Mrs. Andrews was astonished to see the image of a small child sitting happily at her daughter's grave. The ghost child seem to be aware of Mrs. Andrews since he or she is looking directly into the camera.

Is is possibly a double exposure? Mrs. Andrews said there were no such children nearby when she took the photograph and, moreover, did not recognize the child at all – it was no one she would have taken a picture of. She remarked that she did not believe it was the ghost of her daughter as a child.

Investigating this case, Australian paranormal researcher Tony Healy visited the cemetery in the late 1990s. Near Joyce's grave he found the graves of two infant girls.

The Ghost of the Seven Gables

user posted image

While touring the historic House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts – the birthplace of American author Nathaniel Hawthorne – Lisa B. snapped this remarkable photo. The ghostly image of a small boy seems to be in the shrubbery, peering over the wooden fence.

user posted image

The most amazing part of the story of this photograph is that she subsequently did some research about Hawthorne and the house. While looking through a library, she came across one of Hawthorne's books, Twenty Days with Julian & Little Bunny by Papa. On the cover of that book is a portrait of Hawthorne's five-year-old son, Julian. And as you'll see by clicking on the photo at left, the portrait of little Julian bears a striking resemblance to the ghost in Lisa's photograph

Ghost in the Choir Loft

user posted image

In 1982, photographer Chris Brackley took a photograph of the interior of London's St. Botolph's Church, but never expected what would appear on the film. High in the church's loft, seen in the upper right-hand corner of his photograph, is the transparent form of what looks like a woman. According to Brackley, to his knowledge there were only three people in the church at the time the photo was taken, and none of them were in that loft.

According to London Paranormal Database Records, "Mr. Brackley was later contacted by a builder who recognized the face of one that he had seen in a coffin in the church."

Sefton Church Ghost

user posted image

Sefton Church is an ancient structure (started in the 12th century and finished in the early 16th century) in Merseyside, England, just north of Liverpool. This particular photograph was taken inside the church in September, 1999.

According to Real Ghosts, Restless Spirits and Haunted Places, where this photo was found, there was only one other photographer in the church beside the person who took this picture. Neither of them recalled seeing the ghost or any flesh-and-blood person standing there who could account for this image. Because the figure is all in black, it has been theorized that the apparition could be that of a church minister.

Reader Mark Tomlinson reports that a pub next door to the church, called the Punch Bowl, is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man in blue nautical garb, which has been reported there for many years.

Grandpa's Ghost

user posted image

This photo was received from Denise Russell. "The lady in the color photo is my granny," she says. "She lived on her own until age 94, when her mind started to weaken and had to be moved to an assisted living home for her own safety. At the end of the first week, there was a picnic for the residents and their families. My mother and sister attended. My sister took two pictures that day, and this is one of them. It was taken on Sunday, 8/17/97, and we think the man behind her is my grandpa who passed away on Sunday, 8/14/84. We did not notice the man in the picture until Christmas Day, 2000 (granny had since passed away), while browsing through some loose family photos at my parents' house. My sister thought it was such a nice picture of granny that she even made a copy for mom, but still, nobody noticed the man behind her for over three years! When I arrived at my parents' house that Christmas day, my sister handed me the picture and said, "Who do you think this man behind granny looks like?" It took a few seconds for it to sink in. I was absolutely speechless. The black and white photos show that it really looks like him.

None of the above convinces me... Especially The Specter of Newby Church and the Baby Ghost are rather funny than scary... The Specter of Newby Church reminds me of that guy in scary movie...

Oh I buy it. Way to many unexplained things happen around the world...why cant it be ghosts? Is the theory of the undead appearing soooo far fetched? I dont think so. LOVE IT mom tongue.gif Very cool.

That is because to believe it means there is scary stuff out there. My husband had that attitude while the kids and I all talked about this stuff, years ago. BUT when he lost his mind and kept seeing "them" it was a whole different ball game!! my daughter explained it all to him, and he was very relieved that what he was seeing was real.
Just a little while ago i had jumped up from here and ran to the kitchen to get something to eat, and I could smell his smoke right in the middle of the living room.
Any time you want to experiance the real thing come on over!!! I will give you the inch by inch grand tour of what happened where. If the house was bigger I would turn it into a bread and breakfast and give tours!!!

I'm happy you all enjoyed these posts, I'm with Nick on them though. Very interesting, very creepy, intrigued, but there is part of me that just refuses to own it. One thing I do believe though is that many people of the earth need the option of ghosts, whether they are true or not, they have been around since time began and they serve their purpose well.

There is not a person on earth that has not at one time or another encountered the ghost phenomenon ... we all know what one is supposed to be ... we have all heard of them ... we have all participated in the stories of ghosts whether it be telling or listening to the tale ... but the greatest thing that ghosts do for us is that they keep us questioning smile.gif We never lose that wonder and it spreads to everything unknown. Got to love Casper!!!

Well it's easy to say it doesn't exsist when it's not in your face. Whole other story when things go flying right past you and you are NOT in an earthquake zone. My husband walked into the kitchen about 3 years ago, and an entire knife block went flying across the room. I had a clock come crashing off the wall for no reason, and it didn't loose the nail. I have had objects disappear with every one looking for them and then just turn up. We have heard footsteps up stairs when no one was there. That one particular time I was on the step ladder cleaning the AC and my son and his friend stood there to help, and they both heard it. I have hot and cold spots, since my husband is gone the smell of smoke. And then there is my second youngest, Lexie my 5 pound Yorkie who sees things that are not there.
When my husband was still alive, but across country, he would show up here as well, I would constantly see his doppleganger.
To live in a house like this and be able to share the experiance with other family members is to change your concept of reality. Not to mention that 2 of these other family members, one who sees them as well, are major science buffs. My daughter with years of science classes.
And did I mention that 2 times I was talking on cam with people and they asked who was in the room with me. I asked them to discribe what they saw as I was stairing at the picture on the screen. They were looking at my husband, months after he was gone. Live with it a while. But we don't get scared any more.
