Can you create a folder named " CON " ??????


nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as "CON". This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable. .. At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!

this has a perfect explanation. but most of people are too new to computers to be aware of. Myself, being here for two decades is enough.

The term CON means Console and has a special reserved meaning since the days of MS-DOS, it is a shame Microsoft did not change that.\

In the world of MS-DOS you would type that on an empty C:\ prompt

CODE

copy con testfile.bat

and a different layout would start enabling you to make a text file from scratch !!!

seriously, go open a shell prompt in Windows XP ( Start > Run, then type CMD and hit ENTER, it will get you to a DOS shell ) and type :

copy con testfile.bat

then type (exactly as you see it )

@echo NickTheGreek Rulez !!!

then press F6 followed by the ENTER key

you will then see:

CODE

^Z
       1 file(s) copied.

C:\>

Congratulations !!! you have created a file named TESTFILE.BAT

now run this file : type

testfile.bat ( and then press ENTER )

In the old MS-DOS day the COPY CON command was really useful. it has saved my a$$ many times when i was on a DOS box that had no text editor at all installed. What i did, i typed that command followed by the name and then put all text file content there, one lien after another. Slow method (and no edit on what you type), but still an option.

It is puzzling that Microsoft did not stop the reservation for the CON and even after 20 years thsi can't be used as a folder name

it isd normal to wonder... after all the CON is a name right ? it should be allowed

more not allowed names are :

COM1 COM2 LPT1 etc

meaning Communications Port 1 / 2 and Parallel Port 1 respectively

που να το ξέρω η κακομοίρα...βλέπεις εγώ ασχολήθηκα κατευθείαν με τον editor του Unix που με το W και κάποιες άλλες εντολές σώζαμε το αρχειάκι και μετά βγαίναμε απο τον vi!Στο MS-DOS πέρα απο κάποιες εντολές δεν θυμάμαι να έγραψα κειμενάκι στον editor του!
Βλέπεις είχα περισσότερη αδύναμια στο Unix!
Ααααχ...παππούλη μήπως πρόλαβες και τον πρώτο υπολογιστή που ο όγκος του έπιανε ολόκληρο δωμάτιο..?
